New Proposed Temple of Sri Ramakrishna : An Appeal

Arrival of the Holy Marble Image of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna

Dear Well wishers of  Vidyalaya,

Many ancient Indian centres of learning were developed and maintained by religious institutions with the objective of providing ideal framework for scholarly activities and a commitment to educational excellence.

Pushpagiri, Nalanda, and Taxila are well-known examples that were fully dedicated to the pursuit of learning in ancient India. This establishes the fact that education does not mean mere acquisition of knowledge, but serves the greater purpose of paving the way for students to live an ideal life. Spirituality alone forms the basis for fostering purity, good conduct and selflessness which are all requisites for living a noble life. Our rishis of yore sensed that spiritual ambience is indispensable in providing ideal education. This was precisely the reason why educational institutions were developed in places of worship.

Religion is not confined to rituals and practices alone. It goes much beyond that and is, in fact, capable of facilitating one to live a meaningful life, rich with spirituality, by receiving infinite energy from the universe and understanding its secrets. ‘Strength is life; weakness is death’ according to Swami Vivekananda. If there is one word to denote all sins and bad actions, it is a weakness. Spiritual knowledge removes this weakness and enables man to realize his real nature. Strength does not mean mere physical or even mental vigour but signifies the more significant spiritual power. Religion has the potential to nurture this spiritual strength.

Avatara Purushas, Sages, Seers, and Mahatmas emerge now and then in our Bharata Varsha only to explain this great truth.  Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was one such great personality. He understood that the same God is worshipped in all religions in different names and forms. He realized the underlying unity among all religions of the world and presented to humankind the supreme idea of oneness which was acceptable to all. He saw the presence of God in all living beings. His heart melted for the weak, the downtrodden and the poor. His compassion and equanimity influenced people of all religions to such an extent that they believed that Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa belonged to their own religion.

Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, which bears the name of this Avatara Purusha, today comprises the following institutions: Vidyalaya High School (Gurukula system), T.A.T. Kalanilayam Middle School, Swami Shivananda Higher Secondary School, Gandhi Teacher Training Institute, Industrial Training Institute, Polytechnic College, Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development, College of Arts and Science, College of Education, Maruthi College of Physical Education, and four Faculties of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute(Deemed-to-be University) – Disability Management and Special Education, General

and Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, Agricultural Education & Research, and Computer Science Applications and Research. In addition to these educational institutions, a Rural Development Centre, a Charitable Dispensary, a Bakery, a Printing Press, Disabled Trainees’ Vocational Production and Rehabilitation Centre, and a Bookstall are also operational in the campus. More than 150 staff members, along with their families, reside in our staff quarters. Over these years, Vidyalaya has grown outstandingly in the field of education in South India. We are profoundly committed in our endeavour to nurture students to become strong men with manliness, energy, purity and power.

For decades, we have been utilizing the existing prayer hall of Vidyalaya High School for various celebrations, spiritual retreats, etc. With our growing strength and activities, and a steadily increasing number of people to the temple, an exclusive spacious prayer hall has become a vital necessity. Such a prayer hall with a seating capacity of 600 nos. would facilitate us in enhancing our spiritual activities, thereby immensely benefitting students, teachers and other employees of Vidyalaya including their family members, residents in the neighbourhood of Vidyalaya, devotees, well-wishers and many other visitors.

We invoke the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda in undertaking the proposed construction of the Prayer Hall, details of which are given in this appeal. The total expenditure of the project is estimated to be about 7 Crore Rupees. Needless to say, financial support from noble-minded people is crucial in accomplishing this proposal. It is our ardent desire that people come forward in large numbers to participate in this great and noble task by contributing generously as per their wish and convenience and be a recipient of the gracious blessings of God.

Yours in Sri Ramakrishna,

Swami Garishthananda

Secretary
